Social media plays a massive roll in our society. Whether that be Facebook, Instagram, Discord, YouTube, even Tumblr. It seems there’s something for everyone. However, especially with recent years, many have completely stopped using social media.
Why?
There’s an unhealthy reality to social media. Social media often develops low self-esteem & fear of missing out. Misinformation spreads like wildfire while greedy companies collect your data. You are one in a million numbers to their platform.
Despite knowing all of the bad social media brings, heres some reasons some might stay:
- Scroll/Browse to “relax”
- FOMO/Staying in touch
- Quick Dopamine
- They don’t know healthy alternatives
- They don’t want to face that it’s unhealthy
Social media is a risky gamble with less pros than cons for most. According to Social Media Algorithms and Teen Addiction: Neurophysiological Impact and Ethical Considerations published in 2025, social media addiction can affect the structure of the brain, prefrontal cortex, basal ganglia, amygdala, and anterior cingulate cortex. It floods your senses with directionless media and no place to store it all, because that was how it was designed.
While this post isn’t to discredit abandoning social media altogether, there is another solution.
Blogs and personal sites are overlooked by most. But they have become more important than ever to express oneself freely without suppression. Media without suppression is crucial for maintaining a healthy democracy. This insures government accountability as well as preventing corruption. This is why unbiased news outlets, while rare, are essential.
But why a personal site?
Sites are completely customizable with the right amount of knowledge and can be as simple or as complex as you wish. You can direct people to your specific URL and build it to be anything. You can even make your own social media. Add your own ads & make revenue. Build your own store and sell something. Make a local news page & interview people.
There’s no need to learn how to code or even buying a domain, some free methods for site creation include Carrd, Wix, Notion, Canva, Google Sites, WordPress, Neocities and much more.
You don’t have to pick between the two either, you can run a personal site while also staying on social media. You can even completely disregard everything I just said (free will!)
Point of this is to let you know you are not tied to social media. Don’t be afraid to be individual, you can be the one with the blog site.
